Prednisone is in a class of drugs called corticosteroids. Prednisone prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. The range of indications of the Meticorten prednisone 20 mg is very wide, it is used, among other things, in the following diseases: endocrine disorders (thyroiditis); rheumatic diseases: psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, the initial period of rheumatic disease, acute inflammation of the synovial bag, acute nonspecific inflammation of the synovial bag, acute gouty arthritis; collagenoses – lupus systemic, rheumatoid arthritis; skin disorders – vesicles, severe erythema multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, severe psoriasis; allergic diseases – severe forms: asthma, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, serum sickness, hypersensitivity reactions to drugs; acute and chronic allergic and inflammatory processes of a severe degree involving the eyeball; chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract – Lesniowski and Crohn’s disease, autoimmune hepatitis, respiratory diseases – exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, aspiration pneumonia, tuberculosis; hematological diseases – anemia, thrombocytopenia; cancer diseases.

Contraindications of Meticorten 20 mg

Hypersensitivity, stomach and duodenal ulcer in the acute phase, osteoporosis, Itsenko — Cushing’s disease, tendency to thromboembolism, renal failure, severe arterial hypertension, systemic mycoses, viral infections, vaccination period, active form of tuberculosis, productive symptoms in mental diseases.

Restrictions on use

Meticorten restrictions on use are diabetes mellitus, non-specific infections, latent forms of tuberculosis, pregnancy (especially the first trimester).

Dosage and administration of Meticorten

Oral. For adults, the initial dose of Meticorten is 20-30 mg per day, the maintenance dose is 5-10 mg per day. If necessary, the initial dose can be 15-100 mg per day, the maintenance dose can be 5-15 mg per day. The daily dose should be reduced gradually. For children, the initial dose of Meticorten prednisone is 1-2 mg/kg of body weight per day in 4-6 doses, the maintenance dose is 300-600 mcg/kg per day. The highest single dose for adults is 15 mg, the daily dose is 100 mg. In urgent conditions, large doses of the drug are used for a short time.

Special instructions

Use Meticorten with caution for parasitic and infectious diseases of viral, fungal or bacterial nature (currently or recently transferred, including recent contact with the patient) – herpes simplex, herpes zoster (viremic phase), chickenpox, measles, amoebiasis, strongyloidosis (established or suspected), systemic mycosis; active and latent tuberculosis. Use in severe infectious diseases is permissible only against the background of specific therapy.

Use with caution for 8 weeks before and 2 weeks after vaccination, for lymphadenitis after BCG vaccination, for immunodeficiency conditions (including AIDS or HIV infection).

Use prednisone 20 mg medication with caution in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract: peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, esophagitis, gastritis, acute or latent peptic ulcer, recently created intestinal anastomosis, non-specific ulcerative colitis with the threat of perforation or abscission, diverticulitis.

Use Meticorten prednisone with caution in diseases of the cardiovascular system, including after a recent myocardial infarction (in patients with acute and subacute myocardial infarction, it is possible to spread the focus of necrosis, slow down the formation of scar tissue and consequently rupture of the heart muscle), with decompensated chronic heart failure, arterial hypertension, hyperlipidemia), with endocrine diseases-diabetes mellitus (including carbohydrate tolerance disorders), thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease, severe chronic renal and/or hepatic insufficiency, nephrourolithiasis, hypoalbuminemia and conditions predisposing to its occurrence, systemic osteoporosis, myasthenia gravis, acute psychosis, obesity (III-IV degrees), polio (except for the form of bulbar encephalitis), open – and closed-angle glaucoma.

If necessary, intra-articular administration should be used with caution in patients with a general severe condition, ineffectiveness (or short duration) of the action of the previous 2 injections (taking into account the individual properties of the used GCS).

During treatment with Meticorten (especially long-term), it is necessary to monitor the oculist, monitor blood pressure and water-electrolyte balance, as well as the picture of peripheral blood, blood glucose; in order to reduce side effects, you can prescribe anabolic steroids, antibiotics, and increase the intake of potassium in the body (diet, potassium preparations). It is recommended to clarify the need for the introduction of ACTH after a course of treatment with prednisone (after a skin test!).

In Addison’s disease, concomitant use with barbiturates should be avoided.

After discontinuation of treatment, there may be a withdrawal syndrome, adrenal insufficiency, as well as an exacerbation of the disease for which prednisone was prescribed.

In case of intercurrent infections, septic conditions and tuberculosis, simultaneous antibiotic therapy is necessary with Meticorten.

In children during the growth period, GCS should be used only according to absolute indications and under the careful supervision of a doctor.
